Rebar protection in concrete repair

Exposed reinforcing bar corrodes and expands, cracking surrounding concrete and driving repeat spalling if it is left untreated before a patch.

The problem

The need for rebar protection in concrete repair

BHI Coatings performs rebar protection in concrete repair across Alvin and the Texas Gulf Coast. Once the concrete cover is gone, the reinforcing bar underneath starts corroding and expanding. That expanding rust cracks the concrete around it, and that is what drives the next round of spalling. Patch straight over rusted rebar without treating it and the repair fails from the inside out inside a season or two.

Our method

How BHI Coatings does rebar protection in concrete repair

We clean the exposed rebar back to sound steel and prime it before any cover goes back on. Treating the steel first is what breaks the corrosion cycle that caused the original spall. The crew then rebuilds the cover with a cold-cure repair mortar matched to the structure.

The result

With the steel protected it stops corroding and expanding, so the patch holds and the spalling does not come back in the same place.
